Organizing an AT Protocol meetup
Guidelines for running local AT Protocol meetups and bringing the community together on a regular basis.
You want to organize local AT Protocol meetups? Thank you for putting in the time to bring the community together on a regular basis. Here are some tips and guidelines so your event gets the attention it deserves. If you have questions or suggestions, let us know or open a pull request.
What we expect from an organizer
General
- Run them regularly. Once every six months is a good pace to start with.
- Keep meetups open to anyone with a genuine interest in AT Protocol, even people working on competing products.
- Do not overlap with other AT Protocol meetups in the same region. Coordinate dates with nearby organizers.
- If you organize as a company, a bit of promotion in return for your effort is fine. These meetups should not turn into sales or recruiting events.
- You run the show. As the local organizer you are the first point of contact for speakers and attendees.
Content and topics
- The program is yours. Pick the ideas, topics, and speakers. We are happy to help where needed.
- Coordinate speakers and topics with nearby organizers so you are not all covering the same ground.
- Topics can be shared between organizers if the speaker agrees. If a speaker cannot travel to another meetup, check with them before reusing their talk, and always credit the original creator.
A sample agenda
Around two hours for the program, with optional networking after, tends to work well. This is only a starting point:
- 18:30 doors open
- 19:00 welcome and introductions
- 19:05 talk one, with Q&A
- 19:35 break for food and drinks
- 20:00 talk two, with Q&A
- 20:30 closing words and announcements
- 20:45 onwards, socializing
Announcing the event
- Send us your event details and we will add them to the events page. Include the date and time, agenda, topics and speakers, whether there is food and drink, the location, and anything else relevant.
- Be clear about your target audience so people know what to expect. You do not want someone showing up expecting a beginner intro to a deeply technical session.
During the event
- Ask people to suggest ideas for future meetups, both locations and topics.
- Thank the venue hosts and any sponsors.
- Have fun.
After the event
- Thank everyone on mu.social and ask them to suggest new topics or locations for the next one.
- A short write-up or video recap is great for reach. Publish it and share it from @atproto.nl, and feel free to link the venue hosts or sponsors.
What you can expect from us
- Promotion of your meetup through the site and @atproto.nl.
- Introductions to speakers and organizers from other events.
- A hand thinking through the program when you want a second opinion.
